Church Planting Movements

(Excerpt from Church Planting Movements - How God is Redeeming a Lost World, By David Garrison. Click here for the CPM web site.)

NO WRITTEN DESCRIPTION can do justice to the remarkable effectiveness of John and Hope Chen's "Training for Trainers." John has taken the lofty ideals of Church Planting Movements and reduced them to simple actions that anyone can take. Yet, no approach has yielded more new believers and new churches than this.

If you find yourself struggling with some of the material, or wishing you had more explanation, don't wait for the answers to all your questions. Instead, follow John's advice: "Just do it!"

Creating a Church Planting Movement Ethos

1. Prayer – T4T trainers need to spend hours in prayer and teach their students to do the same. Modeling prayer in their own life enables them to effectively train others to do the same.

2. Spiritual Warfare – T4T warns trainees that Satan will try everything he can to defeat them. Their response to Satan's attacks is to watch, fight, and pray.

3. Thankfulness in All Things - In keeping with Romans 8:28, T4T teaches its trainees to be thankful for all things, knowing that "all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purposes." Thankfulness prepares the trainee for the inevitable attacks and calamities that will accompany his or her ministry. Without a spirit of thankfulness in all things, Satan will find the one thing that will cause a trainee to stop serving the Lord and return to his or her passive lifestyle.

4. Church Planting Movement Proverbs – T4T sessions are to be filled with proverbs and gems of wisdom that communicate important and often overlooked truths.
    a. Church Planting is not rocket science (so don't leave it for the experts or professionals; everyone should be planting churches).
    b. Just do it (God honors doers of the word and not hearers only)!
    c. It is a great joy to win someone to Jesus; it is a greater joy to start a church; it is the greatest joy of all to train someone else to start a church!

5. Training is different from teaching. Teaching transfers knowledge, training changes behavior. T4T workshops emphasize training.

6. You've got to practice what you preach and preach what you practice. T4T is never satisfied with simply instructing others. An effective trainer must also be a doer.

7. Everyone you meet is in need of either evangelizing or training. Evangelize the lost and train the Christians.

8. T4T begins by training any Christian who is willing to be trained. However, training implies action. Trainees who fail to carry out the assignments of sharing their story will be embarrassed when they have nothing to share during accountability time. Before long they may drop out, leaving the “doers of the word” to carry on.

9. T4T does not replace other effective evangelism approaches. Instead, it complements them. Trainees are encouraged to continue to use a range of evangelism tools including the Jesus Film, Four Spiritual Laws, Evangecube, Evangelism Explosion, and others.
